  3. What Will AI Say About Your Business?

Google AI Search and SEO/GEO

Customers May Ask AI Before Visiting Your Website. What Will It Say About Your Business?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode still depend on Search foundations. Use this SEO/GEO checklist to make your business website crawlable, understandable and verifiable.

A business website, search index and AI answer connected through a clear information system

The short answer

  • Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use existing Search foundations; there is no special schema that guarantees inclusion in an AI answer.
  • Controllable priorities include consistent facts, clear service pages, original answers, verifiable evidence, crawl access and meaningful internal links.
  • Indexing, AI descriptions, visits, qualified inquiries and sales should be measured separately; no provider can guarantee rankings, citations or orders.

Vancouver SEO & GEO for Google, Maps and AI Visibility

Focus Media aligns business facts, priority service pages and original answers so search engines, maps and AI can understand the business more accurately.

Watch on YouTube

When a customer searches for “an AI marketing company for a Vancouver small business,” Google or an AI assistant has several questions to resolve. Who is this company? Where does it work? What does it provide? Who is it suited to? What evidence can be checked? How does a customer continue?

When a website compresses every service into one page, company descriptions differ across platforms and important facts are trapped inside graphics, a search system has to assemble an answer from fragments. An incomplete, outdated or inaccurate version can put a clearer competitor in front of the buyer first.

Google’s official guidance for AI Search is surprisingly direct

Google’s AI features and your website documentation states that established SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be accessible to Google, indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.

Google also says:

  • There are no additional AI-specific technical requirements;
  • No special AI text file or schema is required;
  • Meeting technical requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or display;
  • AI features may break a complex question into related searches and assemble information from multiple pages.

That clarifies the relationship between SEO and GEO. SEO continues to cover crawling, indexing, page quality, internal links and search intent. GEO adds attention to whether public information can be accurately understood, organized and referenced in a generated answer. They share the same reliable website foundation.

Eight checks for a website that can serve as a verifiable source

1. Can Google crawl and index the important pages?

Check that robots.txt, noindex, canonical tags, security rules and server responses are not accidentally blocking priority service pages. Google Search Console can help inspect URLs, indexing status and crawl issues. When the page cannot enter the system, later content improvements have no chance to work.

2. Does each priority service have a clear page?

A single page that mixes websites, SEO, video, social media and AI makes it difficult to identify the most relevant answer. A dedicated service page should explain what the service is, whom it serves, what problem it addresses, how the work happens, what evidence exists and what the next step is.

3. Are company facts consistent everywhere?

Check the legal and brand names, address, phone number, service area, business information and principal services. Conflicts between the website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and industry directories make a stable entity relationship harder to establish.

4. Do essential answers exist as visible page text?

Google recommends presenting important content in text. Strong images, video and animation can improve understanding, but they should not carry every fact. Audience, location, scope, process and contact information should be directly readable by people and machines.

5. Does the content add original value?

Google’s guide to generative AI search optimization emphasizes unique, non-commodity content with first-hand value. Producing dozens of lightly rewritten pages around keyword variations does not create much new information.

Useful material comes from genuine customer questions, team experience, clear methods, original data, process, cases and traceable sources.

An insight explains the customer’s problem. A service page shows how the company addresses it. A case demonstrates capability. An assessment offers a next step. Descriptive link text helps readers continue and helps search systems understand how the pages relate.

7. Does structured data match visible content?

Organization, Service, BlogPosting and BreadcrumbList schema can clarify page type and entity relationships. The markup must agree with what a visitor can see. Adding schema does not automatically create ranking or AI citations.

8. Are mobile experience, images and page speed reliable?

Many buyers make their first comparison on a phone. Covered headings, difficult buttons, oversized images, layout shifts and broken forms weaken the opportunity created by search. Images should be crawlable, properly compressed and use alt text that describes the visual rather than repeating keywords.

An existing website with sound foundations can often be improved page by page. When structure, content and code all obstruct understanding, a considered rebuild may create more value than another patch. Focus Media connects both sides through premium website design and development and AI Search, SEO and GEO.

Five question groups for testing how AI understands the company

Do not begin with the brand name. Use language a real customer would use in two different search or AI experiences:

  1. Category: “Which Vancouver AI marketing companies help local businesses acquire customers?”
  2. Service: “Who can provide bilingual websites, SEO/GEO, video and social media operations together?”
  3. Fit: “I already have a website, but Google and AI describe the company poorly. What kind of service should I look for?”
  4. Evidence: “Compare the experience, team, cases and public evidence for these companies.”
  5. Action: “How can I book, request a quote or begin with an assessment?”

Classify the answers as accurate, vague, outdated or missing, then trace each one back to its source. This test cannot prove ranking or predict orders. It can reveal the most obvious gaps between public information and the customer’s question.

Measure whether SEO/GEO is beginning to create value

Separate the signals so that “cited” never becomes a shortcut for “generated revenue”:

  • Technical: Are important pages crawlable, indexed and canonicalized correctly?
  • Visibility: Do relevant queries produce impressions, visits or source citations?
  • Understanding: Do Google and AI accurately describe the company, services, area and evidence?
  • Action: Do visits produce qualified inquiries, bookings or purchases?
  • Business: Are sales, order value, repeat business or acquisition costs improving?

Progress at one level creates conditions for the next. The levels are not interchangeable.

Begin with one priority service

Choose the service the company most wants to grow. Unify its facts, publish one complete answer and add one credible proof point. Then observe crawling, queries and customer questions before expanding into more locations, topics and content.

FAQ

Questions business owners ask

Does a website need special GEO schema for Google AI Search?

No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirements or special schema. Structured data should accurately match visible page content.

Is llms.txt required for a site to appear in Google AI answers?

Google does not list llms.txt as an eligibility requirement. Crawlability, indexing, clear text, internal links and page quality remain the foundations for Google Search.

Can schema guarantee that an AI system cites a page?

No. Schema can help a system interpret entities and page relationships, but it cannot guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, citation or recommendation.

Can important service information appear only in images or video?

That is risky. Images and video support understanding, but essential facts should also appear as clear page text with accurate alt text, titles and context.

How should a company measure progress from AI search?

Track crawling and indexing, query visibility, accuracy of brand descriptions, page visits, qualified inquiries and sales separately. A citation alone is not revenue.
